Google’s recent AR tools will guide individuals to maintain a minimum of 6 feet distance considering the COVID-19 social distancing directives

Google has launched a brand new tool known as Sodar to help individuals follow the six-feet social distancing guideline by using AR and assisting individuals in envisioning the needed space to be maintained.

There’s no refusing the fact that the global pandemic has basically changed every individual’s lifestyle in the most prominent manner. The health officials released information related to the essential steps to be taken in order to entail social distancing and several other essential practices that need to be firmly followed in our day-to-day activities, at least for the foreseen future. But this shift has been quite unforeseen, and every individual will need a little time to adapt to these new habits.

With a view to making this process easy, Google has accurately used the AR technology and launched a brand new tool known as Sodar to help individuals follow the six-feet social distancing guideline. This tool will use AR to assist individuals in envisioning the needed space to be maintained.

Sodar, which is a “social distancing radar”, actually is a web-based augmented reality tool that overlays a 2-meter virtual ring on the viewfinder. Because it is web-based, it is not necessary to have a special application to use it, but it seems to be limited to be used only Chrome on Android. This tool can be used by opening the Sodar website on Chrome of any Android smartphone and allowing the permissions to function on the smartphone.  Also, individuals will have to adjust the tool with a view of the ground and space around, but once this is done, the virtual ring will indicate the distance that needs to be maintained for safety.

Considering the fact that AR-based solutions are not totally reliable in evaluation of the real-world, in spite of all the advancements, it is mandatory for individuals to consider boundary suggested as a guideline and not as a measure of reliability. Considering the issues related to health and public safety, it is better to err on the side of caution. Nevertheless, it is still a useful tool to have to reinforce the concept of social distancing based on guidelines given.
